We work with 14 partners worldwide, from who we source our coffee. In Timor Leste, we work together with Raw Material. On this page you can find everything you need to know about this collaboration.

THE
COUNTRY.

This is one of our more unknown origins. Which makes sense as having gained its sovereignty in 2002, Timor-Leste is one of the world’s youngest countries. As the country finds stability, the development of the agricultural sector is rapidly becoming an important pillar for the structural transformation of the country’s economy. Though it remains highly dependent on income from the oil industry. The problem is that these revenue streams are drying out, quite literally, as production declines. An alternative economic focus is needed, and preferably one that does not threaten the natural resources and lush primary forests. If developed in the right way coffee could be part of the answer.

THE
COFFEE.

Coffee from Timor Leste is grown by smallholder farmers. Really small! Most farmers have less than 0.5 hectares of land that are used for growing different crops. You can imagine that only a small quantity of coffee is grown per farmer. Timor Leste is one of only a few places where arabica is grown semi-wild and organic by default (so without use of fertiliser and pesticides) on volcanic soils at an altitude that allows for super high quality coffee. The Mota Bandeira coffee we offer consists of Hibrido de Timor, Koka and Typica varieties. The last harvest gave taste notes of cinnamon and crisp red apple.

OUR
PARTNERSHIP.

Our collaboration with Timor Leste started in 2021 and we are still going strong, together managing the logistical hurdles and many teething issues of a relatively new supply chain. We receive our amazing washed Timor Leste coffee through Raw Material, a not-for-profit organisation that works on buying, processing and exporting the coffee from Timor to Europe, and who pass on all of the profit to farmers. Our Mota Bandeira coffee (named after a local waterfall) comes from the Ermera region and is made up of the production of more than 11.000 farmers in order to pool together a consistent, scalable specialty coffee.

THE
CHANGEMAKER.

Raw Material is led by Ameta on the ground in Timor Leste supporting small holder farmers towards more high quality, high added value coffee production supporting washing stations to improve their operations.

OUR TIMOR LESTE COFFEE

The coffee from Timor Leste is available once a year as a Discover Monthly: a monthly rotating specialty coffee in our subscription offer. We sell all of the coffee straight after it comes in, super fresh with a short shelf time. After that, another amazing Discover Monthly will be on offer. Our Timor Leste coffee is also available as a special edition every once in a while. Because coffee is a seasonal product in every producing country and logistics are sensitive to changes, the exact timing of the offer is hard to predict. So keep your eyes open for our offers.
