BAD COFFEE.

There is something completely wrong in the coffee industry. A handful of coffee giants control the coffee market, relying on low quality, unsustainable coffee, underpaying farmers and refusing to make a change. The result is Bad Coffee. We are here to change that. With Wakuli farmers get paid really well, the planet gets more love and you get to drink amazing coffee. Win-win-win.

BCORP©
CERTIFIED.

We are not a fan of certification such as Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance. These certificates cost the farmer a lot of money - money that they could also have invested in improving their coffee production. What we are is B Corp certified. This way you can be sure that we really do what we claim: more money to the farmers and more love to the planet.

FAQ

FAQ

What does Wakuli mean?

Wakuli comes from the Swahili word 'Wakulima' which means 'farmer'. We believe that we can only change the coffee chain if we start at the beginning; the coffee farmer.

What is specialty koffie?

Specialty coffee is coffee of the highest quality, where the unique flavors of the coffee bean come out. The Specialty Coffee Association rates coffee beans on a scale of 1 to 100 by cupping. This is a standardized method of evaluating coffee. Only coffee with a score higher than 80 may be sold as specialty coffee.

What is the story behind wakuli?

Wakuli is completely different from most coffee available in the supermarket. Mass produced coffee that is not about the taste of the bean, but about the taste of the roast. Wakuli delivers coffee that differs from what you are used to, both in taste and impact. Coffee just like coffee should actually taste. We start with super fresh, lighter roasted and highest quality beans as the base. With us you know exactly where your coffee comes from, because the coffee farmers we work with are not anonymous suppliers, but partners. This means that we work with them on quality and that more than 9,000 farmers worldwide already have a better income than they had before. This way you can be sure that our partners receive a fair price and you get a much fresher product where you can taste the origin and quality of the coffee bean.

What does your coffee chain look like?

With the Wakuli coffee chain, we mean the path the coffee travels before it come to your door. An important goal of Wakuli is to “shorten” the chain as much as possible. The coffee still comes from Peru or Uganda, but we make the number of steps as small as possible. The difference can be found in the steps that Wakuli takes in contrast to a traditional coffee chain.

Here are the steps Wakuli goes through, in a little more detail. It starts, of course, with the farmer who harvests the coffee beans and where the first processing processes take place. The coffee then often goes on to a cooperative or a 'farmer group'. They are responsible for collecting the coffee, quality control and sales. The next step is that the coffee is taken to a 'Dry mill'. Here the coffee is stripped of its last hard shell, sorted and prepared for export, which is provided by a service provider. In the Netherlands, the coffee is taken to Wakuli's distribution center where it is roasted and packaged. It will then be handed over to the postman and delivered or served through your mailbox in one of our shops Amsterdam.
