We work with 14 partners worldwide, from who we source our coffee. In Mexico, we work together with Union San Pedro. On this page you can find everything you need to know about this collaboration.

THE
COUNTRY.

Mexico is known for high-quality arabica grown mainly in the southern states of Chiapas, Oaxaca, and Veracruz. Its diverse climates and altitudes make Mexico ideal for cultivating coffee with distinct, often complex flavor profiles, ranging from chocolatey and nutty to fruity and floral. As one of the largest coffee producers in Latin America, Mexico has seen a growing focus on specialty coffee, with smallholder farms and cooperatives leading the shift towards higher standards in quality and sustainability. A lot of focus has gone to organic farming practices, and certifications like Fair Trade, with the hope of benefiting both the environment and farming communities. Reality, however, is that a lot of small scale farmers are still disconnected and unable to make ends meet.

THE COFFEE.

We source our coffee from Oaxaca in the south of Mexico. Oaxaca’s coffee production is intertwined with its rugged landscape and indigenous communities. The steep hills, high altitudes, and rich volcanic soil create ideal conditions for growing arabica with complex flavor profiles and a nice, balanced acidity. The coffee grown on these hills is a mix of two varieties that are very typical to the Sierra Sur, Mundo Novo and Pluma Hidalgo. Pluma Hidalgo is a variant of the Typica variety (one of the most well-known arabica types), and was developed in the Sierra Sur, in the town of Pluma Hidalgo just a few miles from San Pedro.

OUR
PARTNERSHIP.

This is one of our youngest partnerships. The first time we have sold this coffee as a Discover Monthly was in October 2024. Union San Pedro is an association of eight smaller sub-associations that represent eight communities located around the town of San Pedro El Alto in Oaxaca’s Sierra Sur mountain range. The Sierra Sur lies to the south of Oaxaca city, toward the Pacific Ocean and the southern slopes roll down towards the west coast of the state. We collaborate with social enterprise “Red Beetle” who are active in the area to support direct export of this amazing coffee to the EU.

THE
CHANGEMAKER.

Union San Pedro is led by Salomon Garcia, originally from Xanica, one of the eight communities in San Pedro. He helped establish the cooperative, which funds demonstration plots for experimenting with farming techniques to improve yields, and has built coffee nurseries to supply high-quality seedlings. Salomon has also focused on reforestation and diversification through ‘bosques comestibles’ (edible forests), growing crops like vanilla, cinnamon, cardamom, and cacao. These initiatives improve soil health and provide additional income for the community.

OUR MEXICAN COFFEE

The coffee from Mexico is available once a year as a Discover Monthly. We sell all of the coffee straight after it comes in, super fresh with a short shelf time. After that another amazing Discover Monthly will be on offer and you will see our Mexican friends again in a year. Because coffee is a seasonal product in every producing country and logistics are sensitive to changes, the exact timing of the offer is hard to predict.
